Ulli Theeyal or Small Red Onion (Shallots) Theeyal Recipe


Ingredients :

Shallots /Small Onions : 10 nos (sliced into thin pieces)
Drumstick - 5 nos ( cut length wise) optional 
Tamarind : 1 small lemon sized
Grated Coconut :  1/2 cup
Dried Red Chilies : 3 nos
Garlic/Ginger - 1 tsp (crushed)
Turmeric Powder : 1/4 tsp tsp
Coriander powder  :2 tsp
Red chili powder : 1 1/2  tsp 
Black Pepper : 1/2 tsp (Crushed)
Fenugreek Powder : a pinch
Mustard Seeds : 1/2  tsp
Green Chilies - 2 nos
Curry Leaves : a few
Salt to taste
Coconut Oil : 3 tbsp



Method of Preparation:

1.Peel and Slice the small onions lengthwise into thin pieces.


2. Heat 1 tbsp oil in pan add Grated coconut and roast until brown color .



3. Add Ginger garlic , Red chili,coriander and turmeric powder,black pepper and tamarind along with the roasted coconut.mix well till its gives an aroma and turns to brown in color.Keep it aside and let it cool.



4. Grind it to a smooth paste.






5. Heat 2 tbsp of oil and add splutter mustard seeds,add curry leaves,green chilies, sliced small onions and saute till the onion turn light brown in color.






6. Add the ground paste and mix well and cook it 10 mints.


7. Then simmer the flame and  add Fenugreek and crushed black pepper and allow to boil 3 to 4 mints .



8.Switch of the flame and serve hot with rice and Enjoy!
